Jeep Lift Kit Buying Guide

Before we continue, we’re going to go over what a jeep lift kit is.

A jeep lift kit is a kit that raises the suspension or body of a jeep. You can perform either a body lift or a suspension lift.

A body lift will increase the distance between the car frame and the body. A suspension lift increases the distance between the car axles and the car frame.

There are a number of reasons for why someone wants to lift their jeep. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Off-roading
  • Aesthetics
  • Fitting jeep for outdoor activities
  • And more…

No matter what your reasons are for lifting your jeep, consider the following questions:

  1. Why am I lifting my jeep?
  2. What will I use my jeep for after it’s been lifted?
  3. What tire sizes and types should I use?
  4. How much am I willing to spend on this?
  5. What other questions should I be asking myself if I want to do it again in the future?

If you’ve come this far, we congratulate you. Below is a list of items you should look out for when you’re looking for the best lift kits for jeeps.

Reasoning

One of the most important things you should ask yourself is why you are lifting your jeep. Understanding your reasoning will help you plan out what to look for in the best jeep lift kit. Furthermore, it’ll help you narrow down what types of kits will best fit your needs.

Budget

There are expensive options and then there are inexpensive options. Sitting down and determining a budget will help you understand what you want to afford. This will help you manage costs and save any excess funds for the future if you decide to have your jeep lifted again.

Doing It By Yourself Or Doing It Professionally

Vehicle modification is an expensive and sometimes costly process. Do you want to lift your jeep by yourself or do you want to have it done by a professional? You’ll want to factor in extra costs for labor as well if you’re looking to have it done by a professional.

If you’re not an experienced mechanic, it’s highly advised to have it professionally done. Having it done professionally will give you ease of mind, and will help shift the liability if something goes wrong. Each vehicle is different so having someone experienced come in will save you more money in the long term.

How Big Are You Lifting?

Jeep lifting comes in a number of different sizes:

  • Small Lift: 1” – 2”
  • Big Lift: 2”+

Depending on how big you’re lifting, this can affect a number of things. This will certainly impact what need in a jeep lifting kit, and your budget. Below is some useful information to know:

Small Lift

Small lifts are usually good if you’re looking to add a little extra room to install 31” tires. This lift usually comprises of coil spaces installed under the stock springs to add a little bump in the front height.

Pros:

  • One of the most cost effective options
  • Easy and quick to install
  • Installation complications are rare

Cons

  • Doesn’t leave room for larger tires
  • Will need to lift jeep again if looking to add more room in the future

Big Lift

Big lifts are ideal if you’re looking for outstanding off-road performance and an aggressive look. 35” tires are usually the most commonly installed with a big lift.

Pros:

  • Adds serious off-roading power
  • Enables your jeep to install larger tires
  • Gives off a more aggressive impression

Cons

  • Very costly and often the most expensive jeep lifts
  • Lots of complications to be expected
  • Usually more fitted for serious off-road enthusiasts

Body Lift vs. Suspension Lift

There is a lot of debate of whether performing a body lift or a suspension lift is actually better than the other. While there is no right or wrong answer, the best answer is that it depends on what you’re looking for.

Body lifts are often the cheapest option to lifting your jeep. You’ll be able to add 1” – 3” without purchasing new shocks. Keep in mind that a body lift larger than 1.5 inches without new shocks installed can reduce your ride quality.

Suspension lifts are more ideal for enthusiasts that want to get the most off-roading power possible. It’s more expensive and takes more muscle to install. However, the benefit is an increase to your jeep’s ground clearance, and are great for dust trails.

Ultimately, choosing a body lift vs. a suspension lift will come down to preference. One is better than the other in some areas but none is better than the other in all areas.

It is considered to be the best wrangler lift kit for its value and price.

One of the things that we liked the most about the Rough Country 609S 3.5" Suspension Lift Kit is that it came with premium N3 shocks. The N3 shocks are nitrogen charged shocks that gives a beautiful blend of off-road performance and freeway ride quality. It also comes loaded with an 18 millimeter spring-loaded piston rod that gives this lift kit a long lifespan.

Our overall experience is that we would definitely buy this again. We purchased this kit because some of the best jeep lift kit reviews we came across recommended this as one of the highest quality lift kits for jeeps. One thing we do want to note is that the instructions that came with it are not reliable at all. We had a number of issues when trying to install this kit but once we figured it out, things were smooth sailing. If you have a little experience as a technician, this won’t be an issue for you but if you’re not experienced at all, we highly advise leaving this to a professional to avoid potential damage.

All in all, while we did experience some difficulty installing this suspension kit, we would still give it a 4.5 stars out of 5. It is the best lit kit for jeep JK that we have come across. While the price was discouraging at first, after installing this and experiencing the jeep off-road, we would say that it was well worth the price.

The kit is designed and tested by certified specialists and vouched by dealerships and professional racers all throughout the United States. Confidence and reassurance were important when we were looking for a suspension kit.

One of the things we liked the most was that we were able to add 30” wheels and tires to our jeep. We did this with minimum training and the results have never been disappointing. We were able to ride down different types of terrain with no issues and the rides have been incredibly smooth.

One problem we did run into was the shock length. When we initially purchased this suspension kit, we though that the shocks that came with the kit were going to be long enough for our jeep. Unfortunately, it wasn’t but we purchased it from another manufacturer with no issues.

Overall, we had a very good experience with the Supreme Suspensions - Full Suspension Tahoe Lift Kit. We would highly recommend anyone to purchase this kit if they’re looking to add about 3” to their front and rear.

We recommend the Supreme Suspensions - Full Suspension Tahoe Lift Kit at 4 out of 5 stars. Although the kit didn’t come with shocks that were long enough, we still highly vouch for this suspension lift kit.

The last item on our list is the Rough Country 272N2 6" Suspension Lift Kit. Rough Country has been known throughout the years to manufacturer some of the best lift kits in this industry. This was certainly one of the top lift kits that we’ve had the pleasure of installing on our fleet of jeeps.

One of the things that we liked the most about the Rough Country 272N2 6" Suspension Lift Kit was the ground clearance that it added to our keep. Installation was easy and we didn’t need to modify our drivetrain or exhausts. We can definitely say with confidence that after installing this lift kit, our rides and off-roading performance have been unrivaled when compared to the other lift kits we’ve used over the years.

One item to note is that this lift kit does not fit HD models. Models such as the 1999 “Classic” models are not ideal for this lift kit. You will certainly have to modify your frame bracket to have this lift kit work.

Overall, it took us about 8 – 10 hours to stall this lift kit. It was certainly a lot longer than the other kits we’ve installed but also one of the most rewarding. However, a rewarding experience does not translate to a better one so if there was anything to improve on, it would definitely be the installation time.

After having experienced the results from this lift kit, we give it a 4 out of 5 stars. If it didn’t take as long as it did to install, it certainly would have gotten a higher rating. Regardless, our jeep benefited from a more aggressive look and the off-road experience has been incredible to say the least.

Things We Liked
